Shaba National Reserve

I visited Shaba a few times between 1990 and 1996. I still remember the solitude and apparent tranquillity of this place, as it seemed to me that nobody else was visiting the reserve. Indeed, the wild animals were my only encounters here during an entire day of my last kenyan safari.

In Shaba I guess I have seen the same Africa of the first european explorers. The atmosphere was primordial, and the loneliness, at the end of the day, brought me a sense of danger.. Actually, this place has never been too quite. Massive killings of elephants by armed gangs took place here in the past, while recent reports of intruders with heavy fire weapons have once again raised concern on the future of conservation and safety in this protected area.
