Area of 40,000 hectares (plus 60,000 hectares of buffer zone) located in central Italy over the territory of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. The park is representative of the Appennine environment, mainly characterized by beech woods (Fagus sylvatica) up to 900 metres of altitude.
Its main attraction is the possibility of viewing different big mammals (deer Cervus elaphus, roe deer, wolf), especially some endemic sub-species of the Appennine region (Abruzzo's chamois, marsican brown bear). Recent sightings of lynxes (Lynx lynx) inside the park have raised concern about the real origin of this newly discovered and isolated population of cats in Abruzzo.
