Bialowieza forest is known especially for being in the past century the last stronghold of the european bison (Bison bonasus). The entire forest block extends over an area of 150,000 hectares across the border between Poland and Belarus, including the last fragment of primary forest in Europe, now protected as a strict nature reserve
